The Concerts

David Russell

David Russell is one of the giants of the classical guitar today. His beautifully polished and refined playing have made him a hero to guitarists and audiences the world over. His many recordings for Telarc have met with tremendous acclaim and numerous awards including a GRAMMY. David is highly sought after and tours the world continuously; this is a rare chance to see the world’s foremost classical guitarist in concert.

Programme includes works by Garcia Tolsa, Sainz de la Maza and ‘Homage to Charles Chaplin’ by Gabriel Estarellas.

STOCHELO ROSENBERG / PAULUS SCHÄFER QUARTET

Stochelo Rosenberg is without doubt the most celebrated gypsy jazz guitarist  since Django Reinhardt and arguably the finest jazz guitarist in Europe right now.

The Dutch Sinti Gypsy has performed at many of the world’s major jazz festivals including Montreal Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz, the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois, Jazz In Marciac, Jazz à Vienna as well as the many important concert venues such as New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles.

Paulus Schäfer, Stochelo’s long time collaborator is a true master currently defining the modern sound of gypsy jazz. Expect to be blown away by his staggering virtuosity and beautifully lyrical guitar playing.

The quartet also features the British guitar virtuoso and master gypsy jazz accompanist Chris Quinn (Robin Nolan Trio) and the leading English double bassist Tom Moore.

Big night of the guitar

Haringey Young Musicians Guitar Ensembles feature prominently in Haringey’s musical life as well as performing nationally and internationally. Tonight’s concert features young guitarists of varying ages and experience together with their teachers from four ensembles.

Haringey Young Musicians Guitar Ensembles have played in prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Alexandra Palace as well as undertaking youth tours to North Cyprus, France, Hungary, Peru, Argentina and Italy. Their repertoire is fun, accessible and challenging. It is drawn from a wide variety of genres including Classical, Rock, Blues, Pop and Latin. The creativity of their teachers is reflected in some outstanding original compositions and arrangements for guitar orchestra that have been shared with other youth guitar ensembles across the world.

Holly Carter is a singer-songwriter and multi-award-winning instrumentalist who has already established a reputation as one of Bristol’s leading fingerstyle guitarists and as one of the UK’s only professional female pedal steel players.

Drawing inspiration from a varied musical upbringing, her musicality entwines aspects of folk, roots and Americana to create a mix that echoes everything from the likes of Gillian Welch to Chet Atkins.

Harnessing an approach to music as a powerful tool for education and change, her songs weave joyously catchy melodies with thought-provoking lyrics that pay homage to a diverse collection of musical and personal heroes.

Antra Lante is a Latvian guitarist, composer and performer based in London. With a passion for creating soulful, instrumental guitar music, she blends atmospheric soundscapes with emotive melodies through original compositions and creative covers arrangements, defining her unique voice of guitar sound and pushing boundaries of contemporary instrumental music.

Along the session work, Antra has achieved academic distinction in degrees BMus Hons and MA in Arts: Popular Music Practice (BIMM London). In 2023, she released her debut solo instrumental guitar EP Walk On Water. Currently her second EP Given is being produced to release in 25th of April 2025, which will delve into the modern instrumental fusion genre.

Young Artist Platform

Gonçalo Maia Caetano is a classical guitarist from Pinhel, Portugal, currently finishing his Master of Arts degree at the Royal Academy of Music. Gonçalo has won over 10 international competitions, including The Prince’s Prize, from The Musician’s Company.

In 2020, Gonçalo joined the Phemo Quartet as a bass player and they have performed in eminent venues such as the Vortex Jazz Club and Kings Place. Later this year, the quartet will release their first album Anti-Revelation.

The programme includes the world premieres of new IGF commissions by Ashkan Layegh and Laila Arafah, as well as works by Toru Takemitsu and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco.

Luke Tyrrell is a multi-award-winning classical guitarist from Reading, England. Combining knowledge from all genres and varieties of guitar playing, and a special interest in underappreciated and underperformed works, Luke strives to offer audiences diverse and unique recitals. Whilst still an undergraduate, Luke was honoured to win the Allison Stephens prize for plucked strings.

Luke is currently presenting a recital program exploring the music of early 20th century Spain and sharing the stories of composers who lived through that period.

The programme includes the world premiere of a new IGF commissions by Kristina Arakelyan as well as works by Errollyn Wallen and Regino Sainz de la Maza.


 

Established in 2020, Wales Guitar Duo is formed of Welsh classical guitarists, Cai Charles and Oliver Manning. They met during their undergraduate studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Known for their on-stage charisma and rapport, Wales Guitar Duo break preconceived concert platform expectations with their choice of repertoire and strong off-stage friendship shining through, bridging the gap between performer and audience.

They have performed both in the UK and abroad, most notably for Budleigh Music Festival and the ‘Maestros de la Guitarra’ concert series in Granada, Spain.

The programme includes a new 2024 commission by Welsh composer David John Roche.
